Seattle Fire Station #2

1987 - Seattle, Washington
Fire Station No. 2, built in 1921, is located in the Belltown District downtown Seattle and provides a handsome 2-story facade on an urban street of shops and low-rise apartments. Renovation and restoration involved a design approach that would bring the Station into compliance with today’s requirements for a modern fire fighting facility while restoring and reintroducing historic design elements.

Design highlights included the replacement of exterior balconies on the north elevation; steel sash, wood doors and windows custom designed to match the originals; cleaning and tuckpointing of brick mortar joints, and patching of stucco; painting of exterior walls; and replacement, patching, and refinishing of original terrazzo and wood floor finishes. The final effect created bright, cheerful living quarters for the firefighters within a functional, efficient and safe working environment.
