Bassetti Architects
Matafao High School
1972 - Pago Pago, American Samoa
Working with representatives of the Government of America Samoa, Bassetti Architects developed a prototype library / learning resource center design which combined traditional Samoan building forms with contemporary building techniques to reflect local and cultural traditions. Special consideration was given to humidity control, air movement and sun protection for this tropical climate.

The prototype design was adapted to the site and program requirements of three specific facilities: Nuulii, Pavari and Matafau Elementary schools. As a result of the success of these elementary school projects, Bassetti Architects was asked to add a music facility and renovate Fagaitua High School.

At Samoana High School Bassetti Architects designed a building to house the science, business education and home economics programs. The design was carefully sited to blend with adjacent campus buildings.

Additional work for American Samoa included masterplanning for a waterfront market, repairs and alterations to transit warehouses and a coast guard station, and the conversion of an existing post office (circa 1910) to a contemporary cultural museum.
