1995 - Seattle, Washington
The first home of the Seattle Children's Theatre was the Poncho Theater, one of Bassetti Architects early theater projects. Now located at the Seattle Center, SCT recently commissioned the firm to transform a 1962 World's Fair multi-purpose room into a Light Box Theater. The facility, adjacent to the company's Charlotte Martin Theater, shares lobby and support spaces with the main stage facility. Design and construction of the fast track project was completed during a seven month time period at a cost which was significantly less than the established budget.
The original concrete and masonry shell of the multi‑purpose room provides the basic form of the new theater. The design approach articulated the few existing architectural features in rich complementary colors in order to create a sense of intimacy and excitement within an acoustically improved facility. A pipe grid was installed overhead to support lighting instruments and rigging. The stage floor was constructed of moveable elements which together make up a twenty two by forty foot stage. Custom designed bench seating system accommodates 280 children.
Bassetti Architects provided complete architectural services for the 4,500-square-foot facility.
