Bassetti Architects
Stadium High School
2006 - Tacoma, Washington
Tacoma’s flagship Stadium High School is a 400,000 square foot renovation and addition to a pivotal structure in a national historic district. Bassetti Architects was the Design Architect for the $60 million project, and Krei Architecture was the Architect of Record. The design incorporates innovative educational planning concepts into an 1893 building which was originally a hotel. New design elements provide safe zoning for both school and community use, a welcoming plaza and galleria for athletic and performing arts functions, and a new parking structure for 220 cars with tennis courts on the roof top.
Functionally, the new Stadium High School was programmed to accommodate multiple teaching and learning pathways. Whether the educators choose to organize departmentally or as semi-autonomous academies, the innovative planning can support the curricular demands. Specialized labs and studios support a variety of learning opportunities, including art, pottery, photography, multimedia, CADD drafting, health, dance, aerobics, music and shop classes.
The grand historic structure was brought into the 21st century with complete seismic, life safety, mechnical, electrical, ADA, and technology upgrades. Exhaustive research combined with careful design allowed the modern amenities to blend seamlessly with the beloved landmark “castle.”
