The Bassetti/BNBuilders team developed an alternative plan that met program needs, while reducing costs for this design-build project. Originally conceived as three connecting buildings, we proposed two separate buildings with the functions of the third building moved to a second story. Due to permitting requirements, separating the buildings provided a schedule advantage.
The pre-engineered metal buildings are augmented by a masonry wainscot and sun-shading devices to add durability, increase function, and enhance visual interest. Bus washing and fueling are accommodated in standalone structures, placed apart from the main buildings to separate the wet and hazardous activities from the central kitchen.
Six bus repair bays are at the heart of the Transportation Center. Support areas include shops, a welding station, parts and tools storage, a lube room, a training room, bus driver lounge, and administrative offices with break and work areas for office, drivers, and mechanic staff. The 20-acre site also provides parking for 170 school buses, bus drivers, cars, and delivery vehicles.
