The three-story addition to the United States Courthouse at Tacoma Union Station is located on a sloping site north of the restored landmark railroad station. The program included the restoration of the existing historic building and a new addition to house ten federal courtrooms, judges chambers, jury and grand jury rooms, marshal’s offices, and detention facilities.
The design for the completed project restores and preserves the character and architectural integrity of the Union Station Historic District while meeting the complex program requirements of Federal Courts. The magnificent entry to the station was returned to its previous splendor, the dome’s copper roof and the cupola were refurbished and ornate interior detailing was restored or replicated. The three story addition recalls the character of the station through adaption of harmonious forms, materials, details and colors.
Bassetti provided interior design, contract document production and construction administration services as part of the design/build team for this $29 million project.
