Seattle City Hall was designed to express the spirit of its citizens and reflect Seattle’s natural environment. Through its sustainable, environmentally-friendly design features, the building captures the essence of the values of people who live, work, and play in Seattle. Largely transparent, the building invites citizens to enjoy and participate in local government. The public plaza area and interior lobby flow in and out of one another, connected by a stream, forming a generous and beautiful symbol for Seattle.
Seattle City Hall is a LEED-certified project. Built of durable materials and designed for flexibility, the facility is meant to last 100 years. The project incorporates a rainwater collection system for irrigation and toilet flushing; a green roof to reduce storm water run-off, a raised floor system within offices to allow individual climate control and easily altered data and power needs, and recycled and no-VOC interior materials.
Bassetti completed this project as a joint venture with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Bassetti’s primary roles were to lead the public process, make presentations to elected officials, assist in the building design, coordinate sub-consultants and ensure the design would achieve LEED certification. Bassetti was primary designer for sustainable systems, and was responsible for overseeing the LEED certification process. The project has received awards from AIA Seattle, AIA Washington, AISC, BSI, and Northwest Construction.
