Trauma Informed Design

Designing for the Whole Child

By bringing Trauma Informed Design to the design process, we support Educators' needs of Every Child, Every Day; thus supporting over 45% of the student population who are victims of trauma.

To address the pervasive impact of trauma in our schools, Bassetti Architects has developed a Trauma Informed Design (TID) Workbook as a tool to assist designers, educators, and administrators in gaining knowledge and actionable ideas.

Why this, why now? The conversation surrounding trauma informed design comes at an incredibly relevant time as students worldwide are experiencing any number of socially disruptive events from the pandemic to personal, familial, civic, and racial unrest.

The TID Workbook is designed to be an open source document of trauma informed design principals and tools that can help to shape learning environments that support students and teachers who have experienced trauma.

Our workbook began with the Trauma Informed Design Checklist, a compilation of ideas, patterns, and provocations created to be shared, modified, and revised for specific learning communities. Bassetti Architects’ Trauma Informed Design Checklist is the recipient of the 2021 A4LE Kelly Tanner Award.

We continue to develop and share this initiative.

As an open source resource we invite you to share your thoughts and ideas, design photos, and stories so that others may learn from you. Together we strive to right injustices and bring hope and healing to our students.
